In his opening remarks, Halil İbrahim Yılmaz emphasized that Diwali, representing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, perfectly reflects the spirit of the Ankara City Council. He expressed his pleasure in hosting an event that showcases the depth and beauty of Indian culture.
A FESTIVAL IN MEMORY OF A KING

India’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi, stated that such events contribute to making Ankara a more multicultural and diverse city. Explaining the origins of Diwali, the ambassador said:
“This period marks the most festive season in India, usually beginning around September and continuing until December. According to mythology, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama — the hero of our epic Ramayana — to his kingdom after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana. When Rama returned, the people illuminated the entire city with lights to welcome their beloved king. That is how Diwali became such a major festival in India. Its essence lies in celebrating the victory of light over darkness and good over evil — a message shared by many festivals around the world.”
As part of the event, yoga instructors from India led a session for participants. The celebrations continued at Gençlik Park, adjacent to the Ankara City Council, where guests enjoyed authentic Indian dishes. The evening was enlivened by colorful dance and music performances, while the entire venue was illuminated with candles in harmony with the Diwali spirit.
