DOUBLE BASS MASTERS GATHER IN ANKARA

Two world-renowned double bass artists, Thierry Barbé, a leading figure of the French double bass school, and Thomas Martin, will meet young musicians in Ankara as part of the “2nd Ankara International Double Bass Masterclass,” to be held on May 11–15. The artists will offer one-on-one training sessions and give concerts.

Hosted by MAD Art Academy, the masterclass will take place in Ankara between May 11 and 15. The event is organized at the invitation of Suna Dinçer and Berkan Başaran, with the support of the Institut français and the Sevda-Cenap And Music Foundation.

As part of the program, Thierry Barbé will visit Türkiye for the first time. He has served for many years as principal double bass at the Paris Opera and teaches at the Paris Conservatoire. He will be among the instructors leading the masterclass. The program will also feature Thomas Martin, an internationally renowned double bassist who has performed with leading orchestras around the world. He will return to Ankara for the second time for this event.

Over the five-day program, students will work one-on-one with both artists. The training will include technical and musical studies, as well as sessions focused on physical awareness and stretching. Piano-accompanied sessions are also planned to support students’ performance development.

STUDENT CONCERTS

Student concerts will be held as part of the program. Designed to give young musicians stage experience, these concerts will take place on May 13 and 15 at MAD Art Academy. The program will conclude with a gala concert on the evening of May 14, where Thomas Martin and Thierry Barbé will perform with a chamber orchestra formed specifically for the event.

The concert program will feature Giovanni Bottesini’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Alla Mendelssohn, as well as George Frideric Handel’s Sonata for Two Double Basses.
