WORLD CUP FEVER REACHES ANKARA

The Embassy of Mexico in Ankara hosted a viewing event at the Wyndham Ankara Hotel for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa. Diplomats, members of the diplomatic community and football fans from across Ankara gathered to share the excitement of the tournament.

Hosted by the Mexican Ambassador to Türkiye, Javier Díaz de León, the event was attended by South Africa’s Chargé d’Affaires in Ankara, John Mbulelo Toli, as well as diplomats, Mexican and South African nationals, and numerous football enthusiasts from Ankara. Mexico opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory. Díaz de León celebrated Mexico’s first goal with visible excitement.

“I Was There When the Goal of the Century Was Scored”

Addressing football fans before kick-off, Díaz de León said, “We hosted a legendary World Cup in 1970. It was the tournament of Pelé, Rivelino and Tostão, a truly legendary team. Then, in 1986, we welcomed the incredible Argentina side featuring Maradona, Burruchaga and Ruggeri. One of the most iconic moments in football history, the ‘Goal of the Century,’ was scored at the Azteca Stadium during that tournament. I was there. This year, we are going to make history again at the Azteca. For many people, the 1970 and 1986 World Cups remain the two greatest tournaments ever held. This time, we are going to do even better because we have North America behind us. Our great friends, the United States and Canada, are with us. This will be a North American World Cup for the world. You are all welcome.”
