Émile Zola’s unforgettable novel Thérèse Raquin meets the stage once again—this time with a modern interpretation by the Turkish State Theatres.
Translated from French into Turkish and adapted for the stage by Onur Ali Yüce, the production preserves the psychological depth of the original work while skillfully reimagining it for the Turkish theatre audience. Yüce also composed the original score for the play, adding a haunting musical layer that enhances the drama’s intense emotional atmosphere.
The visual world of the stage is brought to life through Emre Satı’s striking set design and Medina Yavuz Almaç’s period-appropriate costumes, which reflect the 19th-century aesthetic with remarkable authenticity.
Director Murat Cidamlı’s meticulous attention to detail allows the emotional complexity of each character to shine through. The cast delivers compelling performances: Gökçesu Ulukut as Thérèse Raquin, Kader Gözpınar as Madame Raquin, Orkun Yılmaz as Laurent, Gökhan Hızarcıoğlu as Camille, İ. Hürcan Sürmeli as Michaud, and Mert Can Sevimli as Grivet. Each actor skillfully conveys their character’s inner turmoil and the underlying tension that drives the narrative.
Staged at the Haşim İşcan Cultural Center in Antalya, this production is a powerful example of how literary classics can be revitalized through innovative theatrical interpretation.
