SONGS OF THE REVOLUTION

The Portuguese Embassy in Ankara celebrated the anniversary of the 1974 Democratic Revolution with a prıvate concert. Songs by José Afonso, one of the most iconic figures in Portugal’s folk and protest music scene, were performed by the Rumos Ensemble.

The anniversary of Portugal’s peaceful April 25, 1974, Democratic Revolution, known as the “Carnation Revolution,” was marked by a concert organized by the Portuguese Embassy in Ankara. Held at Samm’s Bistro, the event featured performances of José Afonso’s songs, including his iconic revolutionary anthem Grândola, Vila Morena. The Rumos Ensemble, made up of Anne Victorino d’Almeida on violin, João Vasco on piano, and Luís Gomes on clarinet, performed Afonso’s songs accompanied by images from the revolution.

Hosted by the Ambassador of Portugal to Türkiye, Virgínia Pina, the concert drew an audience of ambassadors, guests, and music lovers. On the night, José Afonso’s protest songs, closely associated with the revolution, were reinterpreted with jazz elements, offering a modern touch. Through their performance, the Rumos Ensemble delivered a musical journey through Portugal’s history and received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
